Robin Celikates is an associate professor of Political and Social Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He is also an associated member of the Institut für Sozialforschung (Institute for Social Research) in Frankfurt am Main, where he taught political philosophy before coming to Amsterdam. In addition, he was a Program Leader at the Amsterdam Center for Globalization Studies. He specializes in critical theory, civil disobedience, democracy, collective action, recognition, migration and citizenship, and methodological questions in political and social philosophy. His other areas of interest include the philosophy of the social sciences, moral philosophy, Rousseau, and social and political theory.
Robin has been a visiting scholar in the Philosophy Department at Columbia University and a visiting professor in the Philosophy Department and the research group Sophiapol at Université Paris Nanterre. In 2018, he began as a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton working on a book manuscript tentatively entitled “Democratizing Disobedience: Towards a Critical Theory of Political Protest”. Currently he is directing a NWO-funded 5-year research project “Transformations of Civil Disobedience”.
