Emmanuelle Saada is a historian and sociologist whose work engages in law, citizenship, and colonial empire. Professor Saada is Associate Professor of French and History at Columbia University. She has taught at the Institute of French Studies at New York University and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS).
Professor Saada’s first book, Les enfants de la colonie: les métis de l’Empire français entre sujétion et citoyenneté, was published in France in 2007 and won the Auguste Pavie prize. It was translated in English as Empire’s Children (Chicago, 2012). The book examines the relationship between race, filiation, and citizenship in the French Empire. Her current book project analyzes the intersection of law and violence in the French Empire through the history of the Code de l’indigénat, the French colonial penal code established in 1881.
Professor Saada is currently a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, New Jersey.
