A confluence of two disasters\u2014river flooding along the Pearl River watershed and gross infrastructural failure\u2014the global climate crisis has hit hardest the historically disadvantaged neighborhood of West Jackson, an African-American neighborhood with high rates of poverty, traditionally underserved and abandoned by Mississippi\u2019s political establishment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2014, West Jackson has been the home of a remarkable and inspiring project to build a solidarity economy, economic democracy, and Black self-determination called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cooperationjackson.org\/\">Cooperation Jackson<\/a>.\u201d Co-founded and co-directed by the brilliant and charismatic <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/utopia1313\/kali-akuno\/\">Kali Akuno<\/a>\u2014who joins us for Utopia 2\/13\u2014Cooperation Jackson is a model of an alternative way of life that has already spawned other projects coast to coast, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CoopVT\/\">Cooperation Vermont<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/cooperationhumboldt.com\/about-5\/\">Cooperation Humboldt<\/a> in California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes Cooperation Jackson such an important case study of concrete utopia is that it is so richly three-dimensional\u2014along the axes of history, theory, and practice.<\/p>\n<p>To read more, click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/utopia1313\/bernard-e-harcourt-cooperation-jackson-history-theory-praxis\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kali Akuno and Bernard E.
