In 2011 Zethu received a PhD at WISER, Wits University and has been furthering research interests and publishing on queer issues, sexuality, gender, race, HIV and AIDS, African film, cinema and photography. Zethu has been a Visiting Assistant Researcher at Yale University and has received numerous research fellowships. Zethu is an activist and a documentary film-maker and has curated exhibitions, including\u00a0Jo\u2019burg TRACKS: Sexuality in the City,\u00a0and a book project<em>\u00a0Reclaiming Afrikan: queer perspectives on sexual and gender identities<\/em>.\u00a0Zethu\u2019s first co-production\u00a0<em>Breaking Out of the Box:\u00a0Stories of black lesbians<\/em>, (40mins, 2011) has screened locally and internationally and has written the short film\u00a0<em>Rise<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Zethu Matebeni is the convenor of the\u00a0Queer in Africa\u00a0series and lectures in the Sociology Department.
