\nA professor of sociology, Daniel Defert has been assistant (1969\u20131970), ma\u00eetre-assistant (1971\u20131985), then ma\u00eetre de conf\u00e9rence (from 1985) at the Centre Universitaire of Vincennes, which became in 1972\u00a0Universit\u00e9 Paris VIII Vincennes. He has been a member of the scientific committee for human sciences of the International Conference on AIDS (1986\u201394); member of the World Commission for AIDS (World Health Organization) (1988\u201393); member of the National Committee for AIDS (1989\u201398), of the Global AIDS Policy Coalition of\u00a0Harvard University\u00a0(1994\u20131997), and of the French “Haut Comit\u00e9 de la Sant\u00e9 Publique” (from 1998).<\/p>\n

After the death of his partner, Michel Foucault, Defert founded\u00a0AIDES, the first AIDS awareness organization in France. H<\/sup>e served as its president from 1984 to 1991.<\/p>\n

Defert is author of numerous articles in the domain of ethno-iconography and\u00a0public health, and is an editor fo Foucault’s writings. He has been awarded the decoration of\u00a0Chevalier de la\u00a0L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur\u00a0<\/i>and received in 1998 the\u00a0Alexander Onassis\u00a0prize for the creation of AIDES.<\/p>\n
