The music is written and performed by Tara Williamson, and the video was made with the help of Rulan Tangen, Minowewebeneshiinh Simpson and the support of Marrie Mumford.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/79076989\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">April 12, 2018 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/location-of-the-jerome-greene-annex\/\">Jerome Greene Annex<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Columbia University<\/h2>\n<p>The Standing Rock protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline during 2016-2017 built on decades, or rather centuries, of resistance to ongoing colonial dispossession and dehumanization\u2014or, in the judicious words of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/leanne-betasamosake-simpson-indigenous-resurgent-mobilization\/\">Leanne Betasamosake Simpson<\/a>, to four centuries of \u201cconquest, genocide, expansive dispossession, unfettered capitalist exploitation, heteropatriarchy, white supremacy and environmental apocalypse.\u201d The long history\u2014and its present manifestation\u2014is indeed a travesty of justice and inhumanity. There are no other words to describe it.<\/p>\n<p>We gather at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/12-13\/\">Uprising 12\/13<\/a> to explore and discuss the unique dimensions of what we are calling \u201cStanding Ground,\u201d in honor of Standing Rock, as a specific modality of revolt. Although it shares certain features with other forms of resistance that we have already analyzed\u2014features such as nonviolence (which we explored in our session on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/5-13\/\">Satyagraha<\/a><\/em>), breaking silence (which we discussed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/8-13\/\">nave of Riverside Church<\/a> on the anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.), or social media and digitization with #NoDAPL (which we explored both in the context of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/3-13\/\">Arab Uprisings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/4-13\/\">#BlackLivesMatter<\/a>), we encounter with Standing Ground\/Standing Rock certain dimensions that are novel or more accentuated than elsewhere:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a domestic, American story of ongoing anti-colonial struggle<\/li>\n<li>an encampment as a form of resettlement<\/li>\n<li>a gathering of multiple sovereignties as a form of \u201ccounter-sovereignty\u201d<\/li>\n<li>a spirituality tied to the land and water<\/li>\n<li>a target of counterinsurgency warfare strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Our Uprising 12\/13 session will explore these unique dimensions of Standing Ground\/Standing Rock with four exceptional artists, activists, and scholars: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leannesimpson.ca\/\">author and artist<\/a> Leanne Betasamosake Simpson,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.julianbravenoisecat.com\/\">author<\/a> Julian Brave NoiseCat, professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschool.edu\/public-engagement\/faculty-list\/?id=4d6a-4d34-4d44-6731\">Jaskiran Dhillon<\/a>,\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nwillis9?lang=en\">political consultant<\/a> Nicole Willis.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to Uprising 12\/13!<\/p>\n<p>[Read full post <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.law.columbia.edu\/uprising1313\/bernard-e-harcourt-introduction-to-standing-ground-standing-rock\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a9 Bernard E.
