Weinstein Professor for the Humanities in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University; Director of the Institute for Social Research, Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt am Main (since 2001); and C4-Professor of Social Philosophy, Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt am Main (since 1996).<\/p>\n<p>From 1992 to 1996, Professor Honneth was C4-Professor of Political Philosophy at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin; from 1991 to 1992 he was C3-Professor of Philosophy, University of Konstanz.\u00a0 From 1983 to 1989 he was \u201eHochschulassistent\u201c (scientific assistant) to Prof. Dr. J\u00fcrgen Habermas, Dept. of Philosophy, Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt\/M.; from 1982 to 1983 he had a Research Grant with Prof. Dr. J\u00fcrgen Habermas, Max-Planck-Institute for Social Sciences, Starnberg.\u00a0\u00a0 From 1977 to 1982 he was Wissenschaftlicher Assistent (scientific assistant), Institute of Sociology, Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Honneth studied Philosophy, Sociology, and German Literature at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universit\u00e4t Bonn and Ruhr-Universit\u00e4t Bochum from 1969-1974, earning his M.A. in Philosophy in 1974.\u00a0\u00a0 His postgraduate studes were at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin from 1974-1976.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 His Dissertation (thesis), at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin in 1982 was entitled \u201eKritik der Macht. Foucault und die Kritische Theorie\u201c.\u00a0 Professor Honneth\u2019s Habilitation (postdoctoral thesis and postdoctoral lecturing qualification) was in 1990 at the Department of Philosophy, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt am Main, entitled \u201eKampf um Anerkennung\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Honneth received the <a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloch.de\/kulturpreise\/ernst-bloch-preis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ernst Bloch-Preis<\/a> from the City of Ludwigshafen (Germany) in 2015,\u00a0the <a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.renner-institut.at\/bruno-kreisky-preis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruno-Kreisky Prize from the Karl-Renner Stiftung in Vienna<\/a> in April 2016, and\u00a0the\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucd.ie\/newsandopinion\/news\/2016\/june\/09\/ucdulyssesmedalawardedtofrankfurtschoolphilosopher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ulysses Medal, University College Dublin\u2019s highest honour<\/a>, for his lifetime contribution to social philosophy and critical theory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-type-text field-field-specialization\">\n<div class=\"field-label\">His areas of specialization include Social and Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Social Theory.
