Columbia Law School\u2019s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law<\/a> was honored on August 13 by the American Bar Association (ABA) this weekend with the Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy Award<\/a> in recognition of its outstanding contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development efforts in the United States.<\/p>\n

The award was presented by the ABA Section of Environment, Energy and Resources during the association\u2019s annual meeting in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Sabin Center has emerged as one of the premier sources, arguably the premier source in the world, for information, analysis, and education on the law of climate change,\u201d said Pamela Esterman, chair of the ABA awards committee.<\/p>\n

Accepting the award was Faculty Director and Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia Law School Michael B. Gerrard<\/a>, recently ranked as the top \u201cThought Leader\u201d in environmental law in North America by Who\u2019s Who Legal<\/a>.”These are perilous times for the effort to fight climate change. Law and lawyers have never been more important, and it is gratifying that the ABA is recognizing our work in this effort,” said Gerrard.<\/p>\n

The Sabin Center, founded by Gerrard in 2009 and co-led by Executive Director Michael Burger<\/a>, works across eight program areas<\/a> to develop legal techniques to address climate change. The Sabin Center is a member center of the Earth Institute<\/a> at Columbia University, and frequently collaborates with Earth Institute scientists on cutting edge interdisciplinary research. Gerrard is chair of the Earth Institute\u2019s faculty.<\/p>\n

\u201cCombating the global challenges brought on by climate change demands profound changes in the behavior of, and collaboration among, governments, private sector firms,\u00a0NGOs, and individuals. The Sabin Center is at the forefront of this continuing fight,” said\u00a0Gillian\u00a0Lester<\/a>, Columbia Law School\u2019s Dean and the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law. \u201cI am extremely proud of Mike Gerrard\u2019s pioneering work to develop and establish an effective legal response to climate change, while also training the next generation of lawyers who will be leaders in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the Sabin Center\u2019s many notable and recent initiatives is the Climate Deregulation Tracker<\/a>, which was launched after the inauguration of President Trump to track steps by the new administration and Congress to roll back climate protection policies. Other initiatives include:<\/p>\n
