We are proud to announce the launch of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/silencingscience.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an improved version of the Tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014a tool more critical than ever as the second Trump administration takes a chainsaw to climate, public health, and other areas of scientific research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund and the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law launched the Silencing Science Tracker 8 years ago as a comprehensive, accessible database of the many attacks on science during the first Trump administration. Entries date back to November 2016, when a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/references-to-climate-change-removed-from-cdc-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">website was changed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to remove references to climate change, the first of many similar moves to censor or alter established scientific findings in the post-truth Trump era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We continued to maintain the database during the Biden administration and have been busier than ever adding entries in the first year of Trump 2.0. Now we have transitioned it to a new platform that\u2019s easier to use and has added functionality, including enhanced search capabilities\u2013something that is sorely needed, with the tracker now including over 700 entries and expanding every week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the new and upgraded features of the Silencing Science Tracker include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enhanced tagging to make it easier to find specific information and identify larger patterns in the administration\u2019s anti-science actions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A more intuitive interface that provides an easier user experience for filtering, sorting, and analyzing results<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Improved search functionality, allowing users to easily find entries on specific topics or individuals<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Highlighting instances when public outcry, court losses, or other pushback have forced the administration to change course<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s now clearer than ever just how widespread, and devastating, the second Trump administration\u2019s attacks on science have been. While the Tracker has historically focused on attacks against climate scientists, the data make clear that the current assault is much broader, affecting research in all fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interference in public health research has become so prevalent that we have added it as its own category. The appointment of anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has already had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/hhs-secretary-makes-misleading-claims-about-measles-vaccine-touts-alternative-treatments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">devastating consequences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Under his watch, the agency has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/hhs-fires-thousands-of-employees-including-agency-leaders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fired thousands of federal scientists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/nih-terminates-research-grants-for-lgbtq-gender-identity-and-dei-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">terminated billions of dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in grants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/cdc-adds-debunked-link-between-autism-and-vaccines-to-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">altered official government webpages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to disseminate anti-vaccine and other propaganda, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/rfk-jr-dismisses-entire-advisory-committee-on-immunization-practices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">installed sycophants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in positions that are critical to our collective well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While HHS makes up a disproportionate number of Trump 2.0 entries, the damage extends across the federal scientific infrastructure. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/cdc-removes-data-sets-whole-pages-from-its-website\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data sets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Congressionally-mandated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/national-climate-assessments-removed-from-federal-websites\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, so-called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/mentions-of-climate-change-removed-from-federal-agencies-websites\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">controversial terms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> like \u201cclimate change,\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/cdc-removes-webpages-on-health-equity-and-lgbtq-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">entire webpages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been removed from agency websites. Official federal agency reports pushing false claims about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/department-of-energy-report-includes-false-claims-about-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/maha-report-contains-numerous-errors-cites-nonexistent-studies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">childhood diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been published (and, in both instances, immediately slammed by experts as relying on inaccurate or cherry-picked information to support an ideological objective).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second Trump administration also paused or cancelled billions of dollars in federal grants for initiatives related to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-freezes-billions-of-dollars-in-federal-grants-and-loans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and environmental justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/nih-cuts-billions-in-grants-for-covid-19-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Covid-19 research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-cancels-nearly-500-million-in-funding-for-mrna-vaccine-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mRNA vaccine development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-cuts-4-billion-from-medical-research-funding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">medical research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at U.S. universities, hospitals, and other institutions; cancelled funding for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-cancels-funding-for-womens-health-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Women\u2019s Health Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (which RFK Jr. later called \u201cfake news,\u201d even as an agency spokesperson acknowledged its reversal); and halted funding for entire divisions like HHS\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-cuts-funding-for-epa-office-of-research-and-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/trump-administration-cuts-funding-for-epa-office-of-research-and-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Office of Research and Development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/silencingscience.org\/actions\/epa-eliminates-office-of-research-and-development-will-cut-over-3700-staff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was eventually eliminated altogether<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the 700+ entries in the Tracker make clear, attempts to silence science are not limited to the Trump administration (though his first and second terms account for nearly 500 of the entries). Critical, life-saving research and the people who perform it have been under relentless politically and ideologically motivated attack for decades, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and documentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The suppression of science isn\u2019t just a political debate; it has very real and lasting consequences for public health, the environment, and democracy.
