The Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School, together with New York Sea Grant, is pleased to announce a writing competition for law students interested in writing on legal and policy issues associated with marine carbon dioxide removal. The competition is being held in connection with a one-day symposium on the topic \u201cNavigating Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: From Science to Regulation\u201d which will be co-hosted by the Sabin Center and New York Sea Grant in September 2025.<\/p>\n

The winning article will be published in a special issue of the Sea Grant Law & Policy Journal, an\u00a0online<\/a>, scholarly publication of the National Sea Grant Law Center that will accompany the symposium. The winning author will also be invited to attend the symposium in New York to present their work. The top two pieces will each receive a cash prize of $500<\/strong>. Additional submissions that do not win may still be published if they meet editorial standards.<\/p>\n

Eligibility Criteria<\/strong><\/h4>\n

To enter, students must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.<\/p>\n

Submitted articles should discuss legal and\/or policy topics related to marine carbon dioxide removal. Topics discussed could include international governance of marine carbon dioxide removal, domestic regulation, tribal rights, and environmental justice, among others.<\/p>\n

Articles should be 15,000 words in length. References should be cited in footnotes and conform to\u00a0The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.<\/em><\/p>\n

Submission Instructions and Deadline<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Please email your completed submissions to\u00a0ashwin.murthy@columbia.edu<\/a>\u00a0with the subject line \u201cmCDR Law Symposium \u2013 Writing Competition Submission\u201d by\u00a0June 15, 2025<\/strong>. Include a cover page that includes your name, address, phone number, email address, law school, and year of graduation to ensure anonymity and impartiality of the judging process. Do not include your name or any other personal information in any other part of your submission.<\/p>\n
