The Boston IP Practice Area Panel

The New England Law Students Association (NELSA) is hosting The Boston IP Practice Area Panel. All students interested in practicing IP are welcome to attend, as well as those generally considering practice in new England.

We will have representatives from leading Boston-based law firms who practice in a variety of IP-focused areas, including IP litigation and patent law. They will be discussing their day-to-day work, differences between IP practice areas, specifics about the Boston market, and other general advice for interested students. Pad Thai will be served.

The Society for Law, Science and Technology is excited to welcome Professor Tom Brennan to talk about his academic and professional work as a mathematician and lawyer. Professor Brennan received his Ph.D. in Mathematics before attending law school, and worked at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and Goldman Sachs before returning to academia.

Professor Brennan is currently visiting Columbia from Northwestern, where his research is focused on the use of finance and economic theory to analyze and inform tax policy. His other research interests include the application of finance theory to the law in areas other than tax, the empirical analysis of corporate financing decisions, and the empirical study of judicial behavior. We invite students from the Law and Business schools, and the Math department to meet a uniquely interdisciplinary figure.

SLST is proud to sponsor, along with CBLA and CLES, a panel discussion on the regulatory and legal trends surrounding the public ledger database known as the “Blockchain,” which is integral to the functioning of Bitcoin. Our panelists will introduce you to the tech basics before moving on to the legal landscape and to hot topics such as “Smart Contracts.” You will also learn about the involvement of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, the SEC, the IRC and the CFTC.

This panel will be extremely useful to all law students who seek to distinguish themselves by demonstrating knowledge of the latest legal topics.

  • Miles Cowan – Founder and CEO, TilliT Inc. Prior to founding TilliT, Mr. Cowan was a transactional attorney in the New York office of an international law firm. His practice focused on private equity and venture capital transactions, including debt and equity financings and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Zachary Smith – Co-Founder, TilliT Inc. Mr. Smith is an investor and business operator located in New York. His previous experience includes running hosting operations for Voxel, managing global cloud business strategy for Internap and founding payment processor MerchantPlus.

The discussion will include but certainly not be limited to IP and law and technology jobs in public interest and the private sector, and we’ll also be talking about job search strategies, how to present your background in resumes, cover letters, and interviews, and provide other practical advice.
