What Happened To My Law School Internet Connection?
In short, you need to register your wireless and wired network cards.
We started the Fall 2012 semester with an open network that did not require registering your network card(s). Since then, more devices showed up on the law school network and exhausted all the available Internet addresses. So, the Information Technology department had to reverse course and close the network. We reverted the network to registered mode.
At first, we thought this would only affect a relatively small number of students, since :
- most upperclass students should already be registered (open network was new this semester).
- students who are taking exams were instructed to register their network card(s) in direct messages from the Registrar’s Office.
- the IT helpdesk assisted students in registering their cards during the 8/15/12 to 8/23/12 notebook configuration session.
Admittedly, we did share mixed signals and conflicting information about this topic at the beginning of the semester. We apologize for any inconvenience and any confusion about this.
Here’s the good news, registering your network card is fast, easy, and a one-time task. You can visit the IT help desk anytime between 9:00am to 5:00pm (M-F) for help. Or, you can download a notebook configuration manual located at http://www.law.columbia.edu/law_school/info_tech/Notebook#41245 and register your network cards on your own. Please keep in mind you should register both your wireless and wired adapters.
Walk-in sessions for Examsoft’s Software Installation (Laptop on Exams)
The IT helpdesk has scheduled walk-in sessions for the Installation of Examsoft’s (Laptop on Exams) software.
In order to use the Examsoft software to take exams, you are required to have the latest version (version 11.0) of Softest installed on your notebook. ExamSoft released the new version on 09/06/2012
The SofTest installation is straightforward and you can follow the instructions sent by the Registration Services office to get this done on your own, or visit the IT helpdesk anytime.
Students can visit us in Jerome Greene Hall, room 731 anytime between 09:00 am to 05:00pm, M-F for help configuring a laptop for exams. No appointment is necessary. Just show up and will begin sharing options and/or helping to configure your laptop for exams.
All students are welcomed!
