The national media has spilled much ink reporting on the ousting of three sitting Supreme Court justices in Iowa, something that has never happened in the history of judicial retention elections in Iowa.  Justices David Baker, Michael Streit and Marsha Ternus were removed from the Iowa high court on account of joining the court’s unanimous decision in Vanum v. Brien, the 2009 Iowa Supreme Court case that found the Iowa constitution prohibited the exclusion of same-sex couples from civil marriage. The national media has not paid as much attention to how the marriage rights of same-sex couples were also behind the election of a new crop of republican state legislators in New Hampshire.  Just as the National Organization for Marriage and other national groups working to limit marriage to different-sex couples funded the Iowa judge recall effort, so too NOM invested heavily in the New Hampshire state races with great success – the republican caucus will have a veto-proof majority.  Among their top legislative priorities will be the repeal of New Hampshire’s law allowing same-sex couples to marry.  Read local coverage here.
